The Center for Sustainable Energy (CSE) is driving the Virtual Net Metering Market Development Project to advance solar adoption in the multifamily building sector across California, and beyond. This three-year research project is funded by the Department of Energy's SunShot Initiative, and focuses on expanding the awareness and use of California’s state-mandated Virtual Net Energy Metering (VNEM) tariff to provide greater solar access to tenants and, ultimately, drive down the cost of solar. VNEM provides a special utility billing arrangement allowing energy generation credits from a single solar system to be shared virtually among multiple tenant accounts. CSE’s research and finding's will be valuable, not only, for existing community and shared solar programs throughout the country, but also to emerging markets seeking to develop a successful shared solar program in the future.

The Virtual Net Metering Market Development Project is one of 15 Solar Market Pathways projects funded by the U.S. Department of Energy’s SunShot Initiative aimed at advancing nation’s adoption of solar power.

Solar is amazing. Our Church system saved $22,000 last year from our SDG&E electric bills and is on track to do better this year. The California rebates have been an extra bonus. Our church payback for our system is 6.4 years and we have already passed about 1.8 years. We are also helping the planet with clean energy and making more than we are using to help someone else.
