What You Need to Know

Description:

2008: Air sealing and insulation done through MassSave program at 25% of cost, using their incentives. 2011 participant in deeper energy retrofit pilot MassSave program with Cozy Home Performance: enhanced insulation, adding water propelled closed cell foam on basement walls and sill; insulated walls, attic and basement ceiling with additional dense packed cellulose; performed more extensive air sealing; replaced drafty front door with tightly sealed, highly insulated door.** High efficiency Carrier propane furnace for forced hot air. Efficient water use: at minimal cost, replaced faucet aerators with low-flow ones, installed low-flow shower valve with volume control, MassSave also installed free low-flow shower head. Caroma dual flush toilet (0.8/1.6 gallons per flush, depending on need). Lighting: most fixtures have compact fluorescent bulbs, including dimmable ones installed at no cost by MassSave. Porch entrance light activated by motion sensor. One LED accent light and one Philips LED 60 watt equivalent w/warm, bright light. Landscaping: Rubber pond lining dug around foundation and sloped away from the house to keep water out of basement (after a failed attempt at gutters). Plantings for summer shade and winter wind protection. Green renovation materials: Exterior primer paint extremely low VOC: Fine Paints of Europe. Low and no VOC interior paints. Marmoleum flooring in upstairs bath: made of linseed oil from flax plants, rosin from pine trees, sawdust from lumber industry waste, and a jute backing. Certified asthma and allergy friendly by the Asthma and Allergy Foundation of America. Massachusetts Woodlands Cooperative sustainably grown and harvested flooring, with low VOC water-based finish. Composite lumber for porch steps.

Other Benefits:

Renewables: 14 panel rooftop solar electric (aka photovoltaic or PV) installed through 2012 Solarize Montague program Solar domestic hot water 80 gallon well-insulated storage tank.

Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:

Loose Fill Cellulose Daylighting, Energy Star Appliances, FSC Certified Wood, Local Materials, Non-Toxic Products, Rain Barrels, Recycled Materials

My Motivation:

Wanting to: do what I can to lower my energy use and CO2 emissions to minimize my contribution to climate change, leave a legacy of a functional and healthy environment to the next generations, make my house resilient to cold weather power outages by insulating it well and sealing air leaks, make it healthy by reducing mold-causing moisture, & prevent ice dams.

Experience with Installer:

As a consultant helping homeowners explore energy efficiency and renewable energy options, I also refer clients to qualified energy contractors who will install efficiency measures and renewables such as solar electric and hot water systems.
