What You Need to Know
As part of putting on an addition to our house, we designed in a 3.1 KW grid-tied PV system. The panels are roof mounted.
To date, no maintenance has been needed on the PV system.
Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:
Construction of our addition is 2x6 with R-21 fiberglass insulation in walls and R-49 blown in cellulose in ceiling. Walls are all painted with low or no-VOC paint. Hardwood floors are FSC-certified. CFLs throughout. Double-cell insulated window blinds. Cedar and Ipe decking. Rain barrels used catch roof runoff and are used to water gardens/lawn. Solar electric fencing around chicken coop and apiary. We have an Energy Star rated washing machine and refrigerator.
Our primary motivation was to produce clean energy - but we likely would not have done it without the substantial rebates and credits that were available.
Experience with Installer:
Our experience with our PV installer was very good. We were the company's first install for a PV system - the install went fine but there was a learning curve on submitting all of the forms necessary for getting the approvals from the utility. They have since done many more installs.
