What You Need to Know

Description:

Addition to house included installing solar thermal collectors on the roof to provide a portion of our hot water heating needs. House heated by evacuated tube solar hot water panels and by high-efficiency condensing propane boiler with individually-controlled panel radiators. Domestic hot water heated by evacuated tube solar hot water panels with high-efficiency condensing propane boiler as backup

Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:

House also has a 3.1 KW grid-tied PV system. Addition is 2x6 construction with R-21 fiberglass insulation in walls and R-49 blown in cellulose in ceiling. Walls are all painted with low or no-VOC paint. Hardwood floors are FSC-certified. CFLs throughout. Double-cell insulated window blinds. Cedar and Ipe decking. Rain barrels used catch roof runoff and are used to water gardens/lawn. Solar electric fencing around chicken coop and apiary. Energy Star Appliances

My Motivation:

Our primary motivation was to produce clean energy - but we likely would not have done it without the substantial rebates and credits that were available.

Experience with Installer:

Our experience with the solar hot water installer was very good. They had done this type of system before.
