Modern passive solar home with prototype solar windows

What You Need to Know

Description:

In our home, built in 2010-11, we have installed an array of 13 'solar windows.' These prototype windows are currently in development. They are designed with 4 panes, 2 layers of insulation, and a center layer of gel mass which acts as a heat sink. The windows have exterior shades that are controlled thermostatically to allow or prevent the windows from storing heat. With direct sunlight, the windows can heat up to almost 120º, and provide the majority of our heating in the cooler months.

Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:

The house also includes: efficient super tight SIP construction - R25 walls, R40 roof design to maximize daylighting heat pump hot water heater ductless mini-split heat/AC backup units HRV wood stove no/low-VOC paints & finishes bamboo flooring induction stovetop energy star and low-flow appliances standing seam metal roof corrugated metal siding fiber cement panel siding

Open House Info:

Welcome! Our address is 17 Ashley Rd, North Brookfield, MA We will be at the house from 10am to 3pm. Our house is at the end of a shared driveway - the first house on the drive is also participating in the Open House.
