What You Need to Know
Description:
This system was designed to produce more electricity than we use so that we could convert other energy usage to electric. For example, our domestic hot water production was converted from propane to electricity using a heat pump water heater. We use a propane oven/stove but are cooking more with electric appliances such as a microwave, crockpot, and electric kettle. We also mow our lawn with electricity. There really is no limit to what we can do with electricity made by the sun.
Other Benefits:
Our system allows us to live our values in real time and to help other folks see how solar can work for them.
Maintenance Requirements:
None.
Efficiency or Sustainability Improvements:
Our home is built to be very efficient with super insulation in the walls and triple pane windows in addition to the solar electric system. We heat primarily with wood though we hope to heat more with electricity in the future using heat pumps.
Advice:
Hire an installer that you trust and that is from your area. There are installers who will travel a long way to install systems. But would you hire a heating contractor who lives 3 hours away?
