Solar O&M Provider
Southern Light Solar began with one goal in mind: to make solar power both affordable and easy for New England homeowners and businesses. As residents of the Bay State ourselves, we were very aware of the rising and unpredictable costs of oil and electricity and the uncertainty that comes with it. We know that whether you’re a homeowner or a business, knowing what you’re going to pay each month is a welcome relief.
Our talent lies in making the complex world of solar simple, affordable, and accessible for our customers. From your initial consultation, to installation, to post-installation monitoring, we will work closely with you to ensure your transition to renewable solar energy is as seamless (and painless) as possible.
We are a locally owned and operated company. We answer only to our customers. No investors or shareholders means that we can invest our time and resources on the one thing that matters: ensuring that we can always provide the highest quality solar services and products for our customers.
The worst experience we have ever had with contractors of any trade. First Alex Doucet promised us the permitting process would start in April--it didn't until July. Then he told us it the job would cost $2K-$3K more than what their contract had stipulated. And then, when we agreed to the additional fee, they ended up backing out of the job, and only refunded us our $9K deposit after months of our talking with EnergySage and the Better Business Bureau and finally threatening legal action. Steer clear!
We are terribly sorry this customer views their experience with Southern Light Solar in a negative light. While not a success story (like many of the other reviews), we believe that the final result of the (cancelled) project was both fair and reasonable. The customer had an older home that presented several engineering challenges including a roof structure that was inadequate for the additional solar load. We explored several design and structural options, but ultimately determined that the project was not feasible. Despite substantial design and engineering costs on our end, every dime was returned to the customer (a fact admitted in the above review). Southern Light Solar’s policy is to return complete deposits for projects that cannot move forward due to circumstances outside of the customer’s control (loan approvals, structural upgrades, etc.). We did everything in our power to make this project a success and regret that we were not able to see it through to completion.
From beginning to end no complaints. In fairness I started the process with Solar City and it was a disaster, But I did have a good understanding of what was involved throughout. Alex was responsive, and handled the permitting activity in our town Dennis MA. While we hit some bumps he was responsive throughout. Tori the project manager kept us informed throughout the process and through the whole utility turn on process (which can take some time) Overall no complaints to date (we have been live for 10 days now. End to end it was a 7 month process which by all accounts is pretty quick and would recommend the folks we worked with at Southern Light.
The salesman Alex is dishonest and has poor communication. I was continuously provided misinformation around timeline, financing, etc. When I complained to management they said his “notes” say that was not the case. Are you kidding??? I had my system installed during the switch from SREC II to SMART program and was afraid that if I switched companies at that point I would lose out on SREC II benefits, or I would have (probably should have anyway).
That being said, the installers were great and did a very professional job.
However, I would NOT RECOMMEND Southern Light Solar.
Many thanks for the great comments about our installers and their professionalism. We have a great field team and are very proud of their incredible work. We do apologize that a financing product offered during your initial consultation was no longer available during the later phases of the project. Rates and financing packages change frequently, and it’s important to lock in these programs early in the process. We’re glad you were able to get your project in during the SREC II incentive program and apologize if you felt misled at any point in the process.
My 8KW system was installed in the summer of '18. The process from initial assessment and quote to revisions and finally to installation was very smooth. The salesperson Alex responded to questions quickly and was easy to work with and I am happy with how things have gone since. Compared with other installers, I think Southern Light was much more conservative in their production estimate and my system has been outperforming my expectations by a pretty big margin, even over the winter months. The equipment is top-notch and the Enphase monitoring system gives a per panel breakdown in their app or online so I can see if there are any issues (none yet). Highly recommended!
Southern light was good about the initial quote and the installation, however, they have not been great with communication or follow up. A couple of times we were supposed to get calls for inspections and didn't. It also took 4 months to get my deposit back. No one ever returned my call, I just had to bug them until it was done. By that time I paid $100 in interest on the deposit. Then it took multiple times to find out about the national grid refund, and when lower then expected, I emailed three times with no response or explanation. They are all perfectly nice folks when you finally get them on the phone and local, which I like, but really need to be more professional about communicating and follow through.
Company was very quick to send me a quote. Scheduled a visit with Alex. He was supposed to send me a list of references and contract terms. No follow up even after numerous texts and emails. If this is the way company treats customers before they have their business, then I'll go elsewhere. Buyer beware!
Had an excellent experience with Southern Light Solar, Even though we live on the Northshore, Southern Light Solar won my bid to install our solar. They had great references and helped me understand the technology and process of deployment throughout the lifecycle of the final solution. Also I loved using Energysage to help educate me and manage all the bids and communication. I had to review and consider six different Solar companies. The team that installed the system were very professional, honest, and hard working. They worked all day(s) until the system was up and running. I decided to go with the 31 x SILFAB SLA-M 310w panels, 31 x IQ7 Microinverters (rated 250w-35w), and IQ Envoy. I really liked that multiple inverters eliminated any Single Point of Failures (SPOF's), Southern Light Solar guaranteed their workmanship for many many years, and most of the equipment comes with a 25-year warranty (panels, Inverters). The only challenge we have is with National Grid (NG). The new SMART program is not 100% with NG and they still trying to get the process formalized and completed. We have been generating a lot of excess back to the grid, over two months now, but NG still has not fixed the issues so I can start generating SMART credits and get paid. Hopefully will get sorted out over next couple of weeks. If you have any questions on my Solar journey, please feel free to reach out. Happy to share what I learned and how my Solar is working.
Chris Sheldon and his crew are top notch. Together, he and his team of sales people along with Tori, Lionel put together a very comprehensive package of design and installation documents. David Santos did a great job installing the system even during some pretty inclement weather. This was all during the transition from SREC to the Smart Program. They were all upfront about project expectations, transparent, and honest throughout the whole process. I highly recommend them if you are looking for the best value and a customer service oriented team.
This company sent me a quote. We had 2 email conversations, but they never responded to my last 2 emails. I even included my phone number. I guess they don't want new business.
Sales person on point, however when it cam to the actual project, it took longer than expected. Once job was complete system is now up and running and haven't ran into any issues yet.
I initiated my search for a solar energy company late in the year, needing to have a system installed by calendar year end, in order to qualify for tax benefits. Southern Solar was highly responsive working with me to refine the system and related costs. I had a special request, which was to use the SunnyBoy inverter, and they researched it and configured system accordingly. Which made me very happy (the SunnyBoy will supply a small amount of power even during grid failure, a unique feature)!
I should also mention that SLS beat every single estimate that I got. There was one other company that was close, but they even beat them.
Then came the weather! December 2017 was when the wicked cold came in. SLS knew that I had to be completed by December 31 and in order to do so, they worked to install the system during the most frigid temperatures that we had during that time. They even shoveled some remaining snow off the roof. I mean, it was like 4 degrees outside! Tough people, and incredible job.
They installed a 11.37KW system on our new house last October. They are on time and we are very happy with the system to-date.
I would recommend Southern Light Solar to others. They answered all of my questions in a timely manner and did a great job with the installation.
I heard from my neighbor about how long and painful the solar process was despite the benefits. I was weary going in, however a friend of mine spoke very highly of Southern Light Solar. I called and scheduled an appointment for the end of March. The woman on the phone was very nice and outlined the initial process very clearly. Matt showed up right when he said he would, and he explained to me exactly what I would be paying and exactly how much I would be saving. I didn’t feel like I was reading a manual while I was briefed. He was very friendly and easy to work with. Matt referred me to a bank that gave me a great loan rate and the term that I wanted. The bank was a bit slow on processing my eligibility, however once I was approved I had panels on my house by late April. Great overall experience.
I have no complaints. Southern Light Solar was easy to work with and had a very competitive price. Alex answered all of our questions and made sure that we were informed before making a decision. The installers were very quick and were not a disturbance during the installation. They left the roof and the yard clean when they were done. If you are thinking about going solar, I would strongly recommend Southern Light!
I was very pleased with the Andy who sold the solar panels to me. He continued to assist me even after the sale. I also was very pleased with the install they told me a date they would be coming ,how long the install would take. They called after install to make sure everything had gone as planned. I have recommend Southern Light Solar to my friends and neighbors .
We purchased a 4000 watt solar system from Southern Solar in the Spring of 2014. After receiving quotes from 6 or 7 different solar companies, we felt Southern's quote was easier to understand and offered the best value. All work was completed as stated, pretty much a seamless process. The system has been producing green energy for 18 months, no problems, no noise, we don't even know they are there.
No electric bill and our SREC payments have been larger than estimated. We expect to break even after 3 years. I have recommend Southern Light to numerous potential solar consumers and will continue in the future.
