Why Go Solar?

Going solar helps reduce greenhouse gases and other emissions associated with fossil fuels, promotes job creation and diversifies New York’s energy sources. It can also be a good investment for property owners.

I think the single most important thing about EnergySage is that it got companies coming to me.

The second most important thing was that I kept getting new quotes and thinking about different options. The quotes were for different price points, and it was the last quote I got that was the best - partly because I had asked questions and knew better what I was looking for by that time!”

New York’s Solar Incentives Save You Thousands!

Going solar is often a great financial decision in the Empire State. The combination of upfront rebates and tax credits reduces the initial cost considerably, and utility bill savings help cover these costs and pay a return for years to come. Financing through a solar loan can eliminate this upfront cost completely so homeowners can save money from day one!

Solar Rebate

The New York Solar Energy Research & Development Authority (NYSERDA) offers a cash rebate to lower the upfront cost of solar called the Megawatt Block Grant. The rebate amount is based on the solar system size defined in watts, and this amount is gradually reduced over time. For example, a 5,000 watt system (5 kW) in upstate New York would currently be eligible for a 35 cent / watt rebate, or $1,750. Given that a system of this size may cost around $15,000, this rebate represents a significant reduction in the cost to homeowners.

For a more detailed explanation of this incentive, please read this article and for the most recent updates on the status of the Megawatt Block Grants, please visit NYSERDA's online dashboard.

State Solar Tax Credit

New York offers a tax credit of 25% of the cost of your solar system that can be credited against your state income taxes. This tax credit (not simply a deduction) is capped at $5,000. Continuing with the same example as above, this credit would be over $3,000 collected at tax time.

Federal Solar Tax Credit

The federal government also offers a significant tax credit of 30% with no cap. In our example, this would be over $4,000.

Will Solar Work for My Home?

For solar energy to make sense for a homeowner, the roof must have around 4-6 hours of direct sunlight each day with minimal shading from trees or other structures. South facing roofs are the best, but solar can also be installed on east or west facing roofs these days given advancements in solar technology.

Solar energy systems represent a great financial investment for many New York homeowners. An example of a solar energy system for a typical New York family is shown below, along with the average financial costs and benefits. As these numbers suggest, it’s a great time to go solar!

Consider Adding Energy Storage

Batteries provide you with electricity during grid power outages and may be able to save you money as well. These new systems can replace traditional generators for a more environmentally friendly back-up power solution.

While battery systems are not always financially viable for homeowners in New York, they may be an important solution for others. If you have interest in reviewing quotes for energy storage systems, please indicate as much on your EnergySage profile.
