Electric cars are energy-efficient and reduce emissions

Energy efficiency measures how much of a fuel source's energy actually ends up powering the wheels. All-electric vehicles convert roughly 59% to 62% of their battery's energy into motion, while gas-powered cars only convert about 17% to 21% of the energy in a tank of gasoline into forward motion. In practice, that means an EV gets far more driving distance out of each unit of energy than a comparable gas car does.

This energy efficiency also leads to lower emissions and carbon footprint reduction. Because EVs rely on a rechargeable battery, driving an electric car does not create any tailpipe emissions, a significant source of pollution in the United States.

Electric cars cost less to fuel

Charging at home is consistently cheaper than filling up at the pump. It costs about 5 cents per mile to charge an EV sedan compared to 11 cents per mile for a gas-powered sedan—less than half the price. That equates to about $800 per year in fuel savings. However, if you rely only on public chargers you'll save less—about $200 per year in fuel savings compared to filling up at a gas station.

Electric cars require less maintenance

EVs skip the oil changes, transmission fluid, spark plugs, and exhaust system upkeep that gas cars need, and regenerative braking tends to extend brake pad life. AAA's 2025 analysis found that electric vehicles have the lowest maintenance, repair, and tire costs of any vehicle category it tracks. Unless a repair involves the battery pack itself, most other maintenance is comparable to, or cheaper than, a gas-powered car.

Electric cars pair naturally with home solar

If you already have, or are considering, a home solar panel system, an EV is one of the smartest ways to put that electricity to work. Charging your car with power generated on your own roof can bring your fuel costs close to zero and adds another way to offset your electricity bill.

Aside from low to non-existent fuel costs, charging your car with power from your own panels allows you to be completely independent from the volatile fossil fuel market. You won't be at the mercy of gas or electricity price jumps because of foreign markets.

Electric cars perform well and are getting easier to charge on the go

All-electric vehicles are quiet and quick off the line with impressive torque—many car enthusiasts rave about how fun they are to drive.

EVs are also generally more digitally connected than their gas-powered counterparts, with features like app-based charge scheduling and remote climate control.

While improvements undoubtedly still need to be made, public charging infrastructure has expanded quickly in the last few years: Tesla's Supercharger network now accepts the NACS connector used by Ford, GM, Honda, Nissan, and other automakers, giving many more drivers access to a much larger network of fast chargers than they had even a couple of years ago.

Some electric cars can't travel as far

Range remains a limitation, but it's improved substantially. Many mainstream 2026 EVs now travel between 250 and 320 miles on a full charge, and several models exceed 400 miles. For comparison, a gas-powered car will typically travel 300 to 400 miles on a full tank. Range is still worth double-checking against your driving habits, especially if you regularly take long road trips through areas with fewer charging stations.

Charging takes longer than filling up at a gas station

Even with faster charging technology, plugging in takes more planning than a five-minute stop at the pump. A standard 120-volt home outlet (Level 1) adds only 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, which can mean 40 or more hours for a full charge. A 240-volt home charger (Level 2) is much faster, typically adding 20 to 36 miles of range per hour and fully charging an EV overnight. Public DC fast chargers are the quickest option, typically bringing a battery from 10% to 80% in 20 to 45 minutes, and the fastest 2026 models can do it in under 20 minutes. But cold weather, an aging charging station, or a nearly full battery can all slow this down.

Electric cars tend to cost more upfront

EVs still carry a real price premium. The average new EV sold for $56,238 in June 2026, compared to $49,758 for the average new vehicle overall, according to Kelley Blue Book data. That's a gap of roughly $6,500, though it's shrunk over the past year as manufacturers lean on discounts to keep EVs moving. Checking manufacturer incentives and state or utility rebates before you buy can help close that gap further.

EV insurance costs more, and depreciation eats into the savings

Two costs that don't show up on the sticker price also work against EVs. Insurance is one: Insurify's 2026 data puts the average full-coverage EV policy at $3,159 a year, compared to $2,218 for a gas car, though that gap narrows to about 18% when comparing only 2024-and-newer models. EVs tend to cost more to insure because they're more expensive to repair, particularly when the battery pack or advanced driver-assistance hardware is involved.

Depreciation is the other one. AAA's 2025 study found that electric vehicles have the highest depreciation of any vehicle category it tracks, even though they have the lowest maintenance costs. In other words, some of what you save at the pump and the repair shop can get offset by how much value the car loses over time. This varies a lot by model, so it's worth checking resale data for the specific EV you're considering.

Charging stations are not as available or reliable as gas stations

The biggest drawback to going electric? The U.S. is behind many other countries when it comes to reliable public charging. While some states (California, Massachusetts), have invested in public chargers, much of the middle America has not, making it difficult for road-trippers to want make the switch. Even in areas where chargers are plentiful, many stations are plagued by outdated technology and malfunctions, which can increase "range anxiety" for EV drivers.

Despite these charging challenges, improvements are being made. A 2025 report showed that only 14% of all EV owners reported an unsuccessful charging visit—down from the 20% rate that had been hovering since 2021. America is also track to provide access to 100,000 public fast chargers by 2027.

Even though the federal tax credit is gone, EVs remain a strong option for drivers who want to cut emissions and fuel costs and don't mind planning around charging instead of gas stations. They still cost less to fuel and maintain than gas cars, and if you're weighing a purchase against a full cost-of-ownership picture rather than sticker price alone, the fuel and maintenance savings can add up to thousands of dollars over the years you own the car.

Where you live and how you drive matter a lot here. Drivers who can charge at home overnight, rack up meaningful highway miles each year, and plan to keep the car for the long haul tend to come out ahead financially. Drivers without reliable home charging, who drive relatively few miles, or who lean heavily on public fast charging will see a smaller advantage.
