FLO EV charger review: Built to handle tough weather—at a cost

Not all EV chargers are built to handle extreme weather. If you live somewhere with brutal winters, scorching summers, or frequent storms, durability may matter just as much as charging speed. Enter: the FLO Home X6.

FLO refreshed its home charging lineup in 2024 with more options, improved specs, and a wider range of price points. At the top of the lineup is the Home X6, a premium charger built to withstand harsh conditions and years of daily use.

EV charging expert and EnergySage partner Tom Moloughney put the Home X6 through his ChargerRater evaluation, where it earned an 83 out of 100. That's a respectable score, though it didn't crack the top tier of chargers we've reviewed.

Here's why it earned that rating, where it stands out, and whether it's worth the investment for your home.

The FLO Home X6 is a WiFi-connected smart charger available in hardwired and NEMA 14-50 plug-in versions, with your choice of a J1772 or NACS connector. Either way, it’s backed by a 5-year warranty.

EnergySage partnered with Tom Moloughney to evaluate the FLO Home X6 using his ChargerRater, a 100-point system that grades home EV chargers across four categories: cost and value, power and construction, testing, and intelligence.

The X6's weakest showing came in the cost and value category, no surprise given its price, while its strongest marks came from power and construction. When the final score was tallied, the FLO Home X6 earned 83 points, or 4.15 stars out of 5.

You live somewhere with extreme weather

If you're installing your charger outdoors in a climate with harsh winters, intense summer heat, or coastal humidity, the Home X6’s NEMA 4X-rated aluminum enclosure is built to last. The lighter-duty plastic housings of some other chargers aren’t as durable. 

You're charging more than one EV

The X6 supports power sharing, so you can charge multiple units on the same circuit and let them split the available current automatically. That makes it a practical option for multi-EV households that don't want to pay for two fully separate circuits.

You want a longer warranty and flexible installation options

Between the J1772 or NACS connector, hardwired or NEMA 14-50 plug-in wiring, and an integrated or remote connector holster, the X6 can be configured to fit a wide range of garages, driveways, and EVs. FLO backs all of that with a 5-year limited warranty, well ahead of the 3-year terms common among competitors.

Budget is a top priority

At $899, the X6 costs more than double the IYILO Level 2—which scored higher on the ChargerRater. Unless the extra durability specifically matters for your situation, you can get comparable charging speeds for much less.

You want a charger that works with third-party networks

The X6 is locked into FLO's own OCPP-based ecosystem, so it can't be managed through a competing charge management platform. If you're building a multi-brand home energy setup or want the flexibility to switch software down the road, the Home X6 will limit you.

The FLO Home X6 isn't the highest-scoring charger we cover, and it's far from the cheapest. What it does deliver is a rugged, weatherproof charger from a company that's been building EV charging equipment for over 15 years, backed by the longest warranty in its class. If your garage or driveway sees real weather extremes, or you need to power more than one EV from a single circuit, that combination can justify the higher price. Otherwise, you can likely find a different charger that offers the same power output for a fraction of the cost. 

That said, the charger's sticker price is only part of the equation. Installation costs vary based on your panel, wiring distance, and local labor rates. Getting quotes from licensed electricians and checking for available incentives in your area is always a smart step before making your final decision.
