Grizzl-E charger review: Canadian-built toughness without the markup

When most people shop for a home electric vehicle (EV) charger, they’re really after a few basics: something reliable, something well-built, and something that doesn’t feel overpriced. Canada-based United Chargers built its Grizzl-E lineup around exactly that, and it shows. The brand has earned a loyal following—especially among EV drivers dealing with actual winters—by focusing on durability over flash.

This review looks at two models: the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A and the Grizzl-E Classic. They land at different price points and serve different types of buyers, but both use the same rugged, cast-aluminum enclosure that’s become the brand’s calling card. 

EV charging expert and EnergySage partner Tom Moloughney reviewed both through his ChargerRater program. The Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A scored an 88 out of 100 (4.4 stars), thanks to its near-bulletproof build, useful smart features, and strong overall value. The Grizzl-E Classic came in just behind at 85 (4.25 stars), which is a solid showing for a charger that skips the extras and just does its job consistently.

Neither is trying to be everything to everyone. The Ultimate 48A is hardwired only and doesn’t support power sharing. The Classic skips Wi-Fi and app control entirely. But if you’re looking for dependable home charging without paying for features you won’t use, both are easy to recommend.

The Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A is United Chargers’ top-end 48-amp smart charger. It’s hardwired only and comes with a 25-foot cable in either J1772 or NACS, so it’ll work with pretty much any EV on the road today. You get app control through Grizzl-E Connect for scheduling, monitoring, and remote access, plus an upgraded external Wi-Fi antenna that actually improves range over earlier models.

The Grizzl-E Classic keeps things intentionally simple. It plugs into a standard NEMA 14-50 or 6-50 outlet, delivers up to 40 amps, and handles overnight charging without any connectivity. No app, no extras—just plug it in and go. The upside is flexibility and a lower price, especially if you already have a 50-amp outlet and want something you can set up the same day.

Both chargers use the same IP67-rated cast-aluminum enclosure, which is kind of the whole point of the Grizzl-E lineup. These things are built to take a beating—cold weather, outdoor installs, even being run over. (Yes, really.) The company’s CEO once drove an ATV over it on a frozen lake, then dunked it in the water. It kept working.

We teamed up with Tom Moloughney to evaluate both the Ultimate 48A and the Classic using his ChargerRater system—a 100-point scoring framework that grades home EV chargers across cost and value, power and construction, testing, and intelligence.

The Ultimate 48A scored 88 out of 100, with its highest marks coming in the power and construction category. The Classic scored 85 out of 100, earning strong marks in cost and value and power and construction, while scoring lower in the intelligence category due to its lack of Wi-Fi connectivity and app functionality. For a non-smart charger, Tom noted it was an excellent result.

You want strong performance without a premium price tag

At $480, the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A undercuts several of its closest competitors by a meaningful margin. The ChargePoint Home Flex runs $549, the Emporia Pro is $599, and the Tesla Universal Wall Connector tops out at $570—all for chargers that scored a few points lower than the Ultimate 48A on Tom's ChargerRater. For a hardwired 48-amp smart charger with a cast-aluminum NEMA 4 enclosure, that price-to-performance ratio is genuinely hard to match.

You want smart features without paying for load management you don't need

The Grizzl-E Connect app gives you charging schedules, real-time energy monitoring, usage history, and remote control. It covers the basics: scheduling off-peak charging to lower your electricity costs, tracking how much energy you've used, and checking charging status from your phone. If you don't need intelligent load management—which the Emporia Pro offers for an extra $120—the Ultimate 48A gets you strong smart features for less.

You're charging in cold or wet conditions

The IP67-rated enclosure holds up in rain, snow, and sustained moisture exposure—one of the stronger weather protection ratings available on a home charger. While the cable takes a moment to loosen up after an extended freeze, the charger itself handles cold climates reliably. For year-round outdoor EV charger installations in the Northeast, Pacific Northwest, or Canada, this is an easy recommendation.

You have two EVs and want them to charge efficiently at the same time

The Ultimate 48A doesn't support power sharing. Some chargers—like the Tesla Universal Wall Connector (up to six units) or the Emporia Pro—can coordinate with other units on the same circuit to distribute power intelligently. With the Grizzl-E, if you want two chargers running simultaneously, you'll need to size each circuit independently, which could mean a panel upgrade depending on your home's capacity.

You want intelligent load management

The Emporia Pro can monitor your home's total power draw and automatically scale back the charger's output when other appliances are running heavy. This feature can eliminate the need for an electrical panel upgrade for some homes. The Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A doesn't offer this—it draws at whatever amperage it's set to, regardless of what else is running in your home.

You want a simple, reliable charger at the lowest possible cost

At $299.99, the Grizzl-E Classic is one of the most affordable 40-amp Level 2 chargers on the market that's also UL-certified and made with a robust aluminum enclosure. For homeowners who just want to wake up to a full battery without spending a lot—and who aren't interested in apps, scheduling, or energy dashboards—the Classic delivers exactly what it promises.

You already have a NEMA 14-50 outlet installed

If your garage already has a 240V outlet from a previous charger or appliance, the Classic requires zero additional electrical work. Just mount the bracket, hang the unit, and plug it in. That simplicity also makes it easy to take with you if you move. Very few chargers at this price point match both the 40-amp output and the build quality the Classic brings to this plug-in format.

You want to schedule off-peak charging

Time-of-use electricity plans are becoming more common, and scheduling your charging for off-peak hours can meaningfully lower your monthly electric bill. The Classic has no scheduling capability of its own, so you'd have to rely on your EV's onboard scheduling feature, which not all models support. That said, most new EVs today can schedule charging to take advantage of time-of-use electricity plans. If you need that feature, make sure your EV has scheduling capability before purchasing the Grizzl-E Classic, or go with the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A or any Wi-Fi-enabled charger.

You drive a Tesla or NACS vehicle and want native compatibility

The Classic is only available with a J1772 connector. Tesla and other NACS vehicles can use an adapter, but it's an extra step every time you plug in. If you'd rather not deal with adapters, the Grizzl-E Ultimate 48A (available in NACS) or the Tesla Gen 3 Wall Connector are cleaner options. The newer Grizzl-E Classic Connect now offers a NACS version with added Wi-Fi features, though that's a different product at a different price.

The Ultimate 48A earns its spot by doing a lot of things really well: standout build quality, useful smart features, flexible connector options, and durability that actually holds up in real-world testing (not just spec sheets). At $480, it undercuts plenty of competitors without giving much up. There are trade-offs—it doesn’t support power sharing, and the cable can be a little stiff in extreme cold—but they probably won’t matter for many setups.

The Classic is a different pitch entirely. It’s a straightforward, plug-in 40-amp charger that skips the extras and focuses on reliability and price. If you already have the right outlet and just want something that works without overthinking it, it’s one of the easiest recommendations out there.

No matter which you choose, the charger itself is only part of the total cost. Installation can vary quite a bit depending on your electrical panel, how far the wiring needs to run, and local labor rates. Getting a few quotes from licensed electricians is the best way to see what your actual all-in cost will look like.
